Our own fleet — one less handover
Fresh herbs lose their shelf life at handovers. Every transfer between farm, collector and forwarder means another loading bay, another gap in the cold chain, another hour off the shelf life that finally reaches your customer.
Green Mark Herbs runs its own vehicles, on the road every day. Controlling our own transport is how we keep the number of handovers down between the fields in Hawassa and the cargo terminal in Addis Ababa.
From Addis Ababa it is 7 hours 20 minutes non-stop to Frankfurt, with six to seven flights a week in season. Herbs cut in the Rift Valley in the morning can reach a European cold store the following day.

Ethiopian Cargo handles 336,000 t of perishables a year at Bole, with 12,789 m² of cold storage at 2 to 8 °C and temperature-controlled apron dollies.
0 °C for parsley, chives, mint, rosemary, thyme, sage and rocket; 10 °C for basil and red basil, which take chilling injury below that. They never share a pallet. Lemongrass is agreed per shipment.

Germany is probably the largest European market for imported fresh herbs. Imports from non-European countries reached €12.5 million in 2022, the highest in five years, and Ethiopia is named among the supplier countries. Most of it arrives between October and March, when German field production stops. The United Kingdom has become the most interesting market for exporters of non-European origin.
