Basil

Fresh basil growing on the Green Mark Herbs farm in Ethiopia

Fresh Basil from Ethiopia — Wholesale Supply

Ocimum basilicum

Basil is a tender annual herb of the mint family, grown for its aromatic leaves. Our basil is grown on our farm near Hawassa in southern Ethiopia and harvested by hand.

Culinary use

Basil is central to Italian and Mediterranean cooking — pesto, tomato dishes, salads and sauces. Its aroma is heat-sensitive, so it is usually added at the end of cooking rather than cooked through. Related varieties are used in Thai and Vietnamese curries, soups and salads.

Handling

Basil is sensitive to chilling injury and is stored warmer than most other fresh herbs. Keep the leaves dry and protect them from direct airflow.
